Chapter 12

The morning passed quickly with the storm howling outside and the fire crackling warmly within. Raine answered every question she peppered him with, explaining the ways in which the world had changed and the ways it had stayed the same. He’d never been good at telling stories-he’d never even been good at talking truth be told, but she seemed thrilled by anything he said so he kept going, mentally searching for any anecdote that might amuse her, but deliberately avoiding anything that even hinted of something personal.

If he’d stopped to analyze his actions he would have been more than a little surprised at them. He’d made the decision long ago when he’d stood over the lifeless bodies of his loved ones that he was meant to make his way through the world alone. Over the years he’d made friends with the other Guardians and their families, but he’d always managed to keep a safe distance between himself and them. Even with Cadrian, he was able to keep that reserve he desperately needed.

Never feel too much and never let anyone get too close.

They were rules he lived by. Rules that had let him survive the passing of years and civilizations and let him go on after witnessing the terrible things their enemies did to innocents. Rules that let him keep his sanity while watching others grow old and die while he continued on...alone.

And yet, this wisp of a woman was brushing easily past those rules.
